Quick Answer
This reflection for Jesus Calling November 19 explains that recognizing the Shepherd’s voice grows through time spent with Him, especially in Scripture.
Scripture for Today
- John 10:27 (KJV):
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
Reflection: Learning to Recognize the Shepherd’s Voice
A child in a crowded train station can pick out a parent’s voice from dozens of others. She isn’t analyzing sound waves. She has simply heard that voice thousands of times.
That is how we learn to recognize Jesus. His voice is most clearly found in the Bible, so the more we read, the more familiar His character becomes. When a thought comes that is harsh, shaming, or contrary to Scripture, we can pause and compare it with what we know of Him. Discernment grows slowly, and it grows best in a community of mature believers who can help us test what we think we hear.
Try This Today
- Listen in the Gospels: Read one short passage of the Gospels and note how Jesus speaks to people.
- Test the Thought: When a decision looms, ask: “Does this agree with Scripture?”
- Seek Wise Counsel: Share a question about guidance with a trusted friend or pastor.
Prayer for Today
Good Shepherd,
Make Your voice familiar to me. Help me love Your Word, tell truth from noise, and follow You with a willing heart.
Amen.
Question to Carry This Week
Which voices have been loudest in my head lately, and do they sound like Jesus?
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I be sure I’m hearing God and not myself?
Test every impression against Scripture, seek wise counsel, and be humble. Certainty often grows over time.
Does God still speak today?
Christians hold different views on how. Most agree He speaks first and fully through His written Word.
