Quick Answer
This companion reflection for Jesus Calling November 16 invites you to open the week by hearing God’s kindness first and making plans second. Trust at the start of the day shapes how you handle everything after it.
Scripture for Today
- Psalm 143:8 (KJV):
“Cause me to hear thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.”
Reflection: Beginning the Week by Listening First
Most of us check our phones before we check our hearts. Within a minute of waking, we have already met the news, the messages, and the list of everything left undone. By the time we pray, our minds are crowded.
The psalmist asks for something different: to hear God’s lovingkindness in the morning. Think of tuning an instrument before a concert. You don’t wait until the middle of the song to find out it is out of tune. A few quiet minutes with God this Monday tune the heart for the day ahead.
Try This Today
- Pause Before the Screen: Before opening your phone, say one sentence: “Lord, let me hear Your kindness today.”
- Read Aloud: Read Psalm 143:8 aloud once, slowly.
- Bring One Decision: Choose one decision today to bring to God before you act.
Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus,
Thank You that Your love is waiting for me before my day begins. Show me the way to walk this week, and help me begin each morning with trust.
In Your name,
Amen.
Question to Carry This Week
What is the first thing I reach for each morning, and what would change if I reached for God first?
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I’m not a morning person?
The verse is about turning to God at the start of your day, whenever that is. A short prayer on your commute or at your first break counts.
Is a devotional enough for the whole day?
It is a starting point. Let it lead you back to Scripture and prayer through the day.
